Abbie Cardwell’s ongoing musical pilgrimage has taken many forms throughout its expansive journey. Her notoriety as an artist has been well established, with the likes of Kasey Chambers touting her as one of her “Favorite, most memorable artists”.

As past winner of Triple J Unearthed, BMI USA Songwriting, Oz Music Award and ‘The Voice’ competitor, as well as festival appearances at Bluesfest, Womadelaide and more, Abbie is no stranger to the Australian music scene.

With guitar, banjo, harmonica and ukulele in hand, Abbies international sojourn has included performances with the likes of Tony Joe White, Steve Earle, Martha Davis and The Waifs to name a few.

Recently Abbie has found her home in Australia’s Northern Rivers, where she has taken some time away from the limelight. Arriving in 2022, with life after a global lockdown and intense social isolation, Abbie's experience of returning to the bedrock of her song-writing resulted in a time of reflection, formation and seeking to extract the precious stones of her creative life.

“My guitars and banjos were gathering so much dust but they still stared at me like unfaithful exes. It can feel too hard to pick something up again after so much time away”

Mining for the elusive diamonds of her creative life, Abbie has broken into the end of 2022 with her ‘Chispa’ well reinstated. The result has been a transformative change in style and track. Her most recent single ‘Underground’ is a departure from her more country-oriented roots, into an electronic sound.

It’s an ‘Electro-Twang’ sound that showcases a divine assembly of her sublime, warm vocal tones, coupled with an alluringly dreamy intro-beat and rhythm. The song ascends into a rising, ecstatic high and there’s a musical grace and emotion that can only come from an artist's ability to go deep below the surface and find the passion that lies there.  The narrative elements perfectly convey Abbies experiences of being underground “However long it takes, However deep, I'll keep on diggin”.

The digging has clearly paid off. As the joyous pinnacle of the song proclaims “I go underground….Until I shine like a diamond”

Abbie rightly sees the song as a celebration of returning to the inspired life and an ‘Anthem of my creative recovery’. No doubt her fans, both new and old will be able to relate to the feeling.

Underground is released on November 8, 2022 on all streaming platforms.
